Secure Internet Day: First Facebook on illegal content complaints

Facebook is consistently first in Greece in complaints of illegal content, as recorded by the Open Hotline for complaints about illegal or illegal behavior on the Internet, Safeline.gr, while on the other hand the telephone complaints received by the Support Center 8001180015, Hellenic Center for Secure Internet, mostly concern the issues of addiction and Internet bullying behavior.

On the sidelines of the event that took place today in the context of the 11th celebration of the Safe Internet Day at the premises of the "Demokritos" ERC, the Open Complaint Line for illegal content or illegal behavior on the Internet, Safeline.gr, and the Helpline I SUPPORT 8001180015, of the Hellenic Safe Center Internet, they released the statistics , which they collected during 2013.

In detail, SafeLine received a total of 3.094 complaints related to illegal content or activity on the Internet, in 2013. The category that stands out from the large number of complaints concerning it is that of personal data breach (34%). The category of Child Pornography (12%) occupies a significant percentage of complaints, which compared to 2012 is increased by one percentage point (in 2012 this category accounted for 11% of complaints received). It is also worth noting that in 2012 there was a rapid increase in complaints (845 complaints) concerning Facebook and this number increased even more in 2013 (SafeLine received 1.551 complaints).

As SafeLine points out, the reasons behind this rapid increase are changing as more and more users create profiles on this popular social network without being sufficiently informed about the potential dangers that lie ahead.

SafeLine, by gathering information from Facebook complaints, has created a guide with useful information and protection tips against illegal activity taking place on this social network. The most common content of complaints concerning Facebook falls into the following categories:

* Passing passwords and creating a false profile

* Personal data breach

* Electronic bullying (cyberbullying)

* Attracting children for sexual purposes (grooming).

As for the Helpline, during its operation period, from January 2013 to December 2013, it received a total of 1.909 requests. 81% came through telephone communication to the toll free number 8001180015, while a percentage of 19% chose to contact electronically via email at help@saferinternet.gr.

The majority of requests (70%) came from adults (mainly parents, but also "important others" of children / adolescents). Here are the professionals (educators and healthcare professionals) with 16%, and finally the minors who approached the line at 14%. With regard to the type of request, most of the requests concerned behavioral dependencies (37%), while the second place is the internet bullying request (15%). In third place, at 9%, the privacy category was highlighted and the privacy concerns (8%) followed.

The Assistance Line staff provided psychological support and counseling, or provided similar information to 843 reports. In addition, 543 cases (parents or adolescents) were referred to the Adolescent Health Unit Clinic (MEY) to join the MEU program for adolescents with excessive Internet engagement, or for themselves and families to be further supported (eg instances of online bullying). Finally, 362 cases were referred to the Safeline.gr Complaint Line and Electronic Crime Prosecution for Electronic Crime, or to other competent bodies, corresponding to the nature of the report (eg consumer organizations, etc.). It is recalled that the Hellenic Safer Internet Helpline is addressed to teenagers and children as well as their families, providing support and advice on issues related to the use of the Internet, mobile phone and electronic games (intimidation, addiction, harmful content , harassment, etc.).

The conference opened with a special video for this year's celebration of Safer Internet Day by European Commission Vice-President and Commissioner for the Digital Agenda, Neelie Kroes, who pointed out: “We must move forward, all together: keeping our children safe must be about cooperation, not competition. This is the best way to ensure a better internet for children. I hope that on Safer Internet Day, and every day, we can provide a better internet for our children: an environment with fun, creative and educational content, an environment where children can be happy and parents feel comfortable with the exploratory paths of their children online".

Greetings were addressed by Dr. Nikolaos Kanellopoulos, Chairman of the Board and Director of NCSR "Demokritos", Leonidas Antonakopoulos, Head of the Office of the European Parliament in Greece, Christina Karaitidi, Representative of the EU Delegation to Greece and Panagiotis Manouros, Chief Executive Officer Learning of the Ministry of Education and Religions. This year 's event followed a completely different structure from all the conferences of previous years, focusing all its sessions on children and young people. In the first part, a children's theater festival was presented, where students from five primary schools and a kindergarten competed with theatrical events around the correct use of the Internet and then were awarded for their action. In the second part, the members of the "Youth Panel of Saferinternet.gr" starred, asking targeted questions about the safe and creative internet to their peers, but also to representatives of prominent organizations and companies dealing with new technologies.

The event ended with the screening of the award-winning short film "The Grocery Store", which received warm applause from the audience. The film, which is a co-production of Saferinternet.gr and ArtPro, has already been distinguished at the "London Greek Film Festival" with the "Odysseus 2013" award, in the category of best short film. In the foyer of the conference hall, the participants had the opportunity to watch 17 music videos from middle and high schools of the country and admire 176 poems by students of all levels of education, around πλοήγηση στο διαδίκτυο και τη δημιουργία ενός καλύτερου διαδικτύου για όλους.

In Greece, all official events for Safer Internet Day are organized by the Saferinternet.gr Action of the Hellenic Safer Internet Center, which is the National Representative of the INSAFE Network. More than 230 events are taking place these days all over Greece under the coordination of Action Saferinternet.gr, as ambassadors of this day: kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, libraries, municipalities, universities, and private organizations multiply in their own way the theme and the slogan of the celebration.
