Sophos, the company that acquired Sandboxie, our well-known sandboxing software and technology from Invincea in 2017, released the source code of the application to the public.
Created by Ronan Tzur, Sandboxie was first released as an Internet Explorer sandbox tool in 2004. The program's functionality has expanded over the years so that users of Windows can use it to sandbox all Windows applications.
Sophos released the Sandboxie app as freeware in 2019 and promised to release the app's source code sometime later. So the time has come and the source code of Sandboxie is here availables to download. Interested users can download it from official webpage.
The latest version of Sandboxie by Sophos is 5.33.3 and works on Windows 7, 8.1 and 10. All functions that exist in the commercial versions of Sandboxie are also present in this version. In other words, Sandboxie has become a completely free software.
Updates, for bug fixes or improvements, from now on will be made by the community or other bodies that will use the code and continue to develop. Sophos plans to close the license server and the forum on June 1, 2020.
The company will maintain the official website online until then, but plans to close it in the fall of 2020. By then, the community should have fully undertaken the project.
From what I have seen, Sandboxie is being developed by a specific person named David Xanatos. I wonder if it is safe to use it now
