ShakeAlert and your smartphone will provide earthquakes

What is ShakeAlert? Countries like they have sophisticated earthquake warning systems. But too many countries that are less developed (see Greece) do not have it due to the scarcity of financial resources. ShakeAlert earthquake warning system smartphone

So in order to offer some form of protection to these countries, a consortium of US research institutes devised the ShakeAlert Earthquake Early Warning System, which could be installed on smartphones for early earthquake detection.

The idea behind ShakeAlert is that a telephone network in an area could record data on the size and distribution of these movements, and then send alerts to other areas that have not yet been hit. Even with few city volunteers (fewer than 5.000) taking part in the program, the combined data from their mobiles will still be sufficient to evaluate the parameters of an earthquake.

The Agency for International Development has announced that it will fund a pilot project to test ShakeAlert along the Chilean coast.

Institutions participating in the study include Caltech, the University of Houston, the University of and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The research was recently published in the journal Science Advances.
