As Microsoft had promised, Skype from today works in Edge without plugins and without the need to download any application.
Skype announced that it was trying to incorporate ORTC (a standard for video streams over the Web) from the end of 2014.
Meanwhile, Edge became compatible with technology last September, so today's announcement should not be a huge surprise.
Before you could use Skype on the Web, but you needed to install a plugin to do so calls.
Now you can just open it Skype for Web, the Outlook.com, the Office Online or OneDrive inherently through the Edge, and no additional process or regulation is required.
Note that the other person you are talking to should have the latest version of Skype for Windows or Mac. Currently the calls to Android or iOS do not work.
As for the other preletterbrowsers, Microsoft says its developers are working to bring the service to Chrome and Firefox, "once both browsers support the H.264 video codec."
