A year after revealing its plans to build Firefox OS smart TVs with Panasonic, Mozilla has announced that the devices are available in Europe.
They are currently only available in Europe and there are six Panasonic Viera smart TV models powered by the Mozilla operating system (CR850, CR730, CX800, CX750, CX700 and CX680).
Prices of course vary, but as an example we cite the CX700 model available at United Kingdom for $1.600. The TVs are expected to be available everywhere "within the next few months."
The Firefox OS was introduced in 2012 and was originally designed as an alternative operating system for smartphones and tablets.
While Firefox OS faces stiff competition in the mobile space, with devices from Apple and Google dominating, the smartphone space TVs perhaps offers an easier route to market.
Consumers may have fewer preconceptions about TV operating systems than mobile phones or tablets, so the Mozilla Foundation seems to stick to this logic.
To see how it will go.
