A new Symantec report on malware found in May reports that cyber criminals were very active, creating around 44.500.000 new malware versions.
The outrageous number represents an increase over 50% compared to the previous month, which the company system recorded 29.200.000 new threats.
The month with the second largest number of malware is considered by Symantec's March systems, with the total number of threats reaching 35.800.000 samples.
Since the beginning of the year, the month with the lowest malware creation activity was February (perhaps because it has fewer days), with 26.5 million, and in April.
According to company data, the most common threat to OS X is a Trojan called OSX.RSPlug.A, which changes the DNS settings on the affected computer, and directs traffic to intrusion-controlled web pages. Detection frequency increased to 23,9% in May, by one 4%.
The second and third most common threat to OS X is Keylogger, with 14% and Wirelurker, with 9%.
Symantec's report also reports that the number of spear-phishing attacks it has detected declines.
However, it was observed that the attacks using this tactic were more focused on organizations employing fewer than 250 employees, the 42,5% of spear-phishing attacks in May was destined for such businesses or organizations.
The type of attachments that were in most malicious e-mail messages were DOC and DOCX files of Windows Word. These accounted for 40% of the total.
