The research team "Prometheus", which is made up of volunteer students of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens (EMMY-EMPT), built the electric prototype vehicle "Pyrphoros II" with which it participated for the seventh consecutive year in the internationally renowned European fuel economy competition Shell Eco Marathon 2015.
The competition Shell Eco Marathon is under the auspices of the European Commission and was organized at 21-24 May in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
When participating in the competition, the team managed to compete with extraordinary success and travel 487 km with one kilowatt-hour (kWh) breaking down its own previous record.
He ranked 10 among 50 teams that participated in the Prototype Battery Electric Car and became the first Greek team to be in the top ten in this category.
As for the electric propulsion system of the vehicle, it does not include commercial parts but is made entirely by team members, utilizing know-how and technologies which have been developed in the Laboratory of Electrical Machines and Electronics Power of the School, essentially creating its own separate category in the competition.
This year's effort has incorporated these technologies as well as the lessons learned from previous years into an enhanced, original vehicle powered by a photovoltaic panel and high-performance batteries.
The team's success stories include the distinction between over 180 European entries in the competition, with the award "Best Team Spirit off-track award 2013".
The award was given on the basis of team spirit, diligence and difficulty in dealing with the struggles, aiding the other groups, and the way in which Greek culture evokes.
