Developments in cyber security threats and trends from Symantec

The Monthly Intelligence Report of Symantec provides the latest analysis on cybersecurity threats, trends from its team related to malware, spam and other potential business risks.

The company identified an important data which was developed in May and exposed more than 145 million , according to the Intelligence Report, which was published in June, assessing the global threat landscape for the month of May. Until May, the year was relatively quiet in terms of the number and size of data breaches. This follows a relatively quiet three months – data breach-wise – at the end of 2013, where data breaches resulted in the exposure of more than 100 million identities each month, leading Symantec to mark 2013 as the year of mega- breach.

In May, the global threat landscape saw the appearance of another major data breach, as well as a large number of targeted attacks. However, the rate of targeted attacks decreased from an average of 165 attacks per day in January to 54 attacks per day in the month of May. Ransomware is another area of ​​the threat landscape where Symantec reported a slight decrease in threats. Ransomware activity peaked in November 2013, when Symantec blocked 861.000 potential Ransomware infections. Numbers remained relatively high during the early months of 2014, but declined in both April and May, currently at only 17% of the peak activity seen in November 2013.
