Two suitors in the rural Internet

Two instances eventually measured the decision makers of the Information Society (IS AE) in the tender for the installation of broadband networks in rural and remote areas, with a budget of 161 million euro. OTE, on the one hand, and the consortium of Intracom Holdings, Intrakat and hellas online, on the other hand, were the only ones to submit bids for the project, although information in the public eye wanted another format to "swallow" work.

Το έργο του Rural αφορά στην εγκατάσταση και λειτουργία ευρυζωνικής δικτυακής υποδομής σε σχεδόν 5.100 λευκές αγροτικές και νησιωτικές περιοχές (περιοχές που μέχρι σήμερα δεν διαθέτουν ευρυζωνικό ), which correspond to approximately 40% of the Greek territory.

Rural Broadband will be implemented through the Public Private Partnership (PPP) process. The selected entities will be called upon to develop, operate and manage a public infrastructure network that supports the provision of broadband infrastructure to telecom providers to offer services to end users (citizens and businesses).

THE TARGET

It aims to reduce the "broadband gap" between the most disadvantaged areas of Greece, where even basic access is not provided, and the areas of the rest of the country, which enjoy broadband .

Upon completion of the project, which will be "broken" into three geographical areas, a home user located in a "Rural" settlement will be able to connect to the Internet with speeds of over 8Mbps (download) and at least 1MBps (), i.e. speeds capable of meeting the requirements for existing online services, as well as electronic public services (e-GOV, such as e-prescription, TAXISnet, e-paravolo).

Furthermore, according to of the second phase of the project, residents in the intervention areas will be able to connect with speeds of at least 30Mbps (download) and 4Mbps (upload).
