Ubuntu 17.10 Artful Aardvark Test Drive

Ubuntu 17.10 Artful Aardvark, released on October 19, with changes that may upset some friends of the distribution. Canonical's new operating system leaves the well-known Unity interface for GNOME 3.

Gnome 3.26.1 is the default desktop of Artful Aardvark, and will run through the Wayland display server.

Of course after that language change was a gameAs for the Dock now. I never liked adding the dock to the left side of Ubuntu.

The kernel that the new Ubuntu uses is version 4.13.x. We should mention that the Linux Kernel 4.13 is not an LTS (Long Term Support) release but by the time Ubuntu 18.04 LTS release is released, Linux Kernel 4.14 will be released.

The biggest change to the internals of Ubuntu 17.10 Artful Aardvark is that this version uses a Wayland screen manager by default, instead of Xorg. If you think Wayland is causing problems on your system, you can switch back to Xorg by doing click on the selection icon on the login screen. Select Ubuntu on Xorg and login.

Let me mention some applications included in the new Ubuntu 17.10 Artful Aardvark: Firefox, Thunderbird, LibreOffice, Shotwell, Rhythbox and others. Canonical still doesn't include GIMP by default, but it's easy enough to install using it utility Ubuntu Software.
