The latest US Navy research program does not concern a state-of-the-art weapon. Following the "technology fashion", the US Navy agreed with Vuzix to develop smart goggle technology to be used in naval applications.

In particular, Vuzix, based in Rochester, New York, won an initial 75.000 dollar contract and an additional US dollar 680.000 dollar grant from the US Office of Marine Research to develop Google Glass optics that can be placed in classic spectacle frames.

The aim of the program is to gain the ability to view information, data and even images in physical formats that come from a computer in a user's field of view.

Vuzix will partner with Six15 , which specializes in the production of military-grade head-up displays, in order to integrate the relevant technology into the new "smart glasses".

The program will run in two phases. The first phase includes the development of prototypes, while the second phase will include the open field test under real conditions. The technology to be developed for new smart glasses will be used by the US Navy to improve staff training and simulation needs in various conditions. The US Navy believes using such methods will radically change the way it is trained staff.

However, this is a difficult task since the final it should be easy to use and can be worn for several hours of the day, much like sunglasses. This is a normal requirement, since it should not be overlooked that the Vuzix glasses may need to be worn even in combat conditions.

Please note that the US Navy is not the only government agency in the United States to consider the possibility of using smart goggles. Just a few weeks ago, the New York Police took over and tested, in real life, the notorious Google Glass.
