Washington state announced Monday that it has dropped a lawsuit against Facebook and Google alleging violations of the state's transparency law in state advertising campaigns, after both Companies δεν φαίνεται να διατήρησαν πληροφορίες για το ποιος αγόραζε διαφημίσεις κατά την περίοδο των εκλογών.
Attorney General Bob Ferguson, who published copies of the lawsuits (you can find them here and here ) on its website, stated that it would seek sanctions and a ban on non-disclosure of advertising spending in the 2013 elections.
Facebook, on the other hand, announced that it is looking forward to a quick resolution of the lawsuit, since it recently made the appropriate tools available to control who buys political ads on the social network. Like Facebook, Google is committed to maintaining one electronic file for those who use its services.
Facebook and Google are facing criticism from lawmakers, users and various activists for their role in selling political ads after Russians allegedly used fake profiles to serve ads aimed at influencing American voters.conditions in the 2016 US presidential election.
Unlike most US states, both the state of Washington and its state Seattle have had laws since the 1970s that require companies that sell ads (like radio stations for example) to disclose who buys political ads.
Bob Ferguson said his office received a complaint from a citizen in April alleging that Facebook and Google had not provided the legally required information about their political ads.
