Windows 11 made it easier to switch the default proletterof your browsing from Edge to Chrome or Firefox.
Microsoft has introduced a new Windows Settings application that includes a redesigned Applications and Features page. The Applications and Features page lets you set the default file type for your applications, browser, and music player. For browsers, Microsoft has removed the option to use third-party browsers.
Right now, if you try to change the default browser to Chrome or Firefox, you will need to manually change the file type for all possible web-related formats. This includes HTM, HTML, HTTP, HTTPS, SHTML, WEBP, SVG, and even PDF. If you forget to select a box for all the required options, you will not be able to use Chrome or Firefox as your default browser.
This complicated technique is very annoying, and there are users who say that Microsoft is trying to impose its preference on them. Following the reactions of users who spotted the change, Microsoft also had reactions from competitors such as Google and Opera.
Hiroshi Lockheimer, Google SVP, said the new change [default browser] came from "a company that claims to be the most open and with the most options". This is far from an "option". Firefox executives criticized also Microsoft for that uses “additional and unnecessary steps to keep default browser settings”.
Microsoft later confirmed that the company is listening comments by consumers and that changes will be made in the future.
Finally Microsoft decided to replace the complicated default browser setup of Windows 11 with a new one information preview.
In Windows 11 Build 22509, Microsoft has enabled a new toggle that allows you to modify your browser default setting for all web-related file formats.
There is a new "Set Default" button on the Settings page, which makes it easy to set Chrome or Firefox as the default operating system browser.
It is worth noting that Microsoft has not yet officially announced this new "set default" option and we do not know when it will be released for non-beta users.
