Microsoft and officially stopped support for the older Windows Phone 8.1 mobile phone operating system.
For users of Windows Phone 8.1 this means they will no longer receive updates. It also means that Microsoft essentially opens the way for Android and iOS to dominate the market.
With the death of WP 8.1, Microsoft is burying the Windows Phone brand which has been running since 2010. While company initially attracted praise for its approach to the mobile operating system, a lack of compelling devices across the price range, vital features and popular third-party apps led to its slow death.
And now what? Microsoft now only supports Windows 10 Mobile, which are essentially an extension of the desktop version's platform, but are by no means a true rival to Android or iOS. The company has been working on a lot of cloud-based and cross-platform apps and services in recent years, and Windows 10 Mobile doesn't seem to be in their priorities.
