According to the publication, Yahoo was the recipient of classified requests from the two services that needed to develop this special software at the beginning of 2015, which the company eventually developed in May of 2015.
The three sources say that while the company had initially planned to move against government requests requiring the development of the software espionage, Yahoo's legal department didn't think they could win the case, so in the end, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer gave the Tech department the go-ahead to build the real-time spying tool.
Mayer seems to have concealed all of the above from Yahoo's CISO, Alex Stamos (Information Security Chief). Reuters reports that Yahoo's security team discovered the tool a month later, and initially thought it was hacked.
So because Mayer made the decision to develop this tool without her knowledge, Alex Stamos, Yahoo's CISO, resigned a month later and was hired by Facebook.
According to another New York Times publication last week, Mayer was unaware of security issues Alex Stamos discovered to raise his security budget. The result of course we all know since Yahoo was hacked into 2014, and the intruders managed to intercept data over 500 million users of Yahoo.
Reuters says it was unable to check how much and how much data the e-mails could have the NSA and the FBI with the system developed by Yahoo.
According to the three insiders, the tool allowed agencies agencies to create activation words and phrases that functioned as a filter for all of Yahoo's e-mail traffic by scanning emails and attachments in real time.
