Exactly 20 years ago, on October 25, 2001, the Microsoft released a new operating system called Windows XP (XP from eXPerience).
Windows XP went into RTM mode on August 24, 2001, and general availability was announced on October 25 of that year. If you remember, the release of the operating system at that time was something very big. Microsoft came up with all sorts of tricks to show how important the operating system was.
For example, computer manufacturers (OEMs) received a copy of Windows XP (to install it on their devices) in briefcases carried by helicopter.
The operating system was heavily criticized at first for its colorful user interface (Luna) and "huge resource consumption". But later it turned out to be a huge success for Microsoft.
Windows XP was so successful that when they wanted to withdraw it from the market they could not. The operating system has become a real zombie, since it is still installed on too many computers.
Yes, even today, millions of computers are still running XP, even though support was discontinued on 8 April of 2014.
