The application Snapchat promises to delete your photos, the video and your messages. Of course, I promise one thing and do another. According to a new report the service is not as secure as it promises.
The popular app featured in a survey published Thursday, not for her performance, but because she only got one that star out of six on how she protects her customer data from government requests. The annual survey of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, a group on digital rights, has rated more than 24 companies in a number of areas. One of the features it evaluated was the security that the company provides when a government requests data to be delivered to users using the service.
The Snapchat service barely got a star on the policy it followed in the guidelines set by law enforcement.
"This is particularly concerning because Snapchat collects highly sensitive data from its users, potentially compromising users' photos," the EFF report said. "Due to the large number of users and non-users whose photos end up on Snapchat, the service should publicly commit to requiring permission before handing over its users' data to law enforcement. We call on them to change course."
The company, of course, denied the EFF's accusations that it was handing over the data, even in the absence of a warrant.
EFF's report adds to Snapchat's critical criticism in 3's years of operation.
Last week, the controversial company paid a fine to the Federal Trade Commission because it deceived users with its statement that it was removing messages sent through the service, how much data was collected and the security measures that followed.
On May 8, the company said the issues have been resolved and that it continues to "invest in security and to prevent abuse."
