Η Microsoft φέρεται να εργάζεται πάνω σε ένα νέο project που έχει σαν κωδικό όνομα το "Bali." Το νέο project σύμφωνα με την Mary Jo Foley of ZDNet who discovered it is designed to provide the users the control of the data collected by them.
The project is an effort of Microsoft Research and it seems that for now the access is very limited.
The url for the page of the Bali project allows those who have a password to log on to the site and says that those who do not have a code can request one.
Η σελίδα "About" του Bali περιγράφει το project σαν μια "νέα τράπεζα δεδομένων προσωπικού χαρακτήρα που δίνει στους χρήστες τον έλεγχο όλων των δεδομένων που συλλέγονται γι 'αυτούς ... Η τράπεζα θα επιτρέπει στους χρήστες να αποθηκεύουν όλα τα δεδομένα τους (ακατέργαστα και επεξεργασμένα) και θα επιτρέπει στον χρήστη να απεικονίσει, να διαχειριστεί, να ελέγξει, να μοιραστεί και να δημιουργήσει έσοδα από αυτά τα δεδομένα."
Σύμφωνα με τη σελίδα "About", το Bali βασίζεται στην έννοια του "Inverse Privacy"(PDF), μια μελέτη που συνέταξαν το 2014 οι Yuri Gurevich, Efim Hudis και Jeannette Wing, οι οποίοι εργαζόταν για την Microsoft Research την εποχή εκείνη.
Σύμφωνα με την αρχή του "Inverse Privacy" (στα Ελληνικά μεταφράζεται αντίστροφη privacy) an item of personal information is conversely private (or not private) if a third party has access to it while its creator does not. Healthcare providers, the police, toll operators, super market chains and employers in turn generate private data which, in many cases, could benefit the users themselves.
Η σελίδα του Bali αναφέρει ότι το project βρίσκεται ακόμα σε "αρχικό στάδιο", κάτι που σημαίνει ότι οι προγραμματιστές επικεντρώνονται στο να βοηθούν τους χρήστες να συγκεντρώνουν τα προσωπικά τους δεδομένα από διάφορους ιστότοπους.
Although not every Microsoft Research project turns into commercial product or service, I'd like to think that Bali has a good chance of becoming a commercially available service at some point.
With big technology companies like Facebook and Google to collect huge volumes of personal data, Microsoft could benefit from user control over their own data, but also benefit users who want to market it.
