CBP (Customs and Border Protection): A new facial recognition system tested at many US airports helped capture a scammer for the first time at the Dulles International Airport near Washington, DC
The US Bureau of Customs and Border (CBP from Customs and Border Protection) published one Press release which states that a 26man traveling from Brazil with a French passport was recognized by an airport face recognition mechanism, which came into operation three days before. In the follow-up audit, the suspect was found to be from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Of course, CBP celebrates the event, as 105.000 people arrive from outside the US daily (this number does not include travelers from Mexico and Canada), according to International Trade Administration, quoted by Quartz February of 2017. Illegal entry into the U.S. is running high, so the agency needs all the help it can get to control it identity so many people on a daily basis.
The biometric technology that CBP reportedly uses collects first photos από όλους τους ταξιδιώτες και τις συνδέει με τα δηλωτικά πτήσεων και τα ταξιδιωτικά έγγραφα (κυρίως διαβατήρια και θεωρήσεις). Έτσι με το που αγγίζουν το Αμερικανικό έδαφος, οι ταξιδιώτες από το εξωτερικό οδηγούνται σε μια φωτογραφική μηχανή, η οποία αποτυπώνει μια picture and compares it to that of the travel documents, to see if they really are who they claim to be.
The CBP hopes that this practice will not only help identify terrorists and fraudsters who want to enter the United States, but also speed up the passage of airport controls, allowing travelers to go through security procedures without having a boarding pass. The technology is currently being tested at 13 airports - entry and exit points and it is very likely that the number will increase in the near future.
As for our personal better safety and our data privacy, Americans know very well how to gild the pill. For those who know or remember the term "collateral damage" usually refers to human lives (civilians) and has become known through the US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
