CBP New facial recognition system at 13 airports

CBP (Customs and Border Protection): A new one

The US Bureau of Customs and Border (CBP from Customs and Border Protection) published one Press release which states that a 26man traveling from Brazil with a French passport was recognized by an airport face recognition mechanism, which came into operation three days before. In the follow-up audit, the suspect was found to be from the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Of course, CBP celebrates the event, as 105.000 people arrive from outside the US daily (this number does not include travelers from Mexico and Canada), according to International Trade Administration, quoted by Quartz February of 2017. Illegal entry into the U.S. is running high, so the agency needs all the help it can get to control it of so many people on a daily basis.

The biometric technology that CBP reportedly uses collects first from all travelers and links them to flight tickets and travel documents (mainly passports and visas). So upon touching down on American soil, foreign travelers are led to a camera, which captures an image and compares it to the one on travel documents to see if they are who they say they are.

CBP hopes that this practice will not only help identify terrorists and fraudsters who want to enter the US, but also speed up the passage through airport screening, allowing travelers to pass through security without a boarding pass. The technology is currently being tested at 13 airports – input and output and it is very likely that the number will increase in the next period.

When it comes to our personal security and privacy, Americans know very well how to gild the pill. For those who know or remember, the term "collateral damage" usually refers to human lives (civilians) and has become known through the US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
