CHESS New application, with Greek participation, smartly converts mobiles and tablets into interactive tour guides in museums

A new European application, with Greek participation, turns "smart" mobiles and tablets into personal interactive tour guides in museums

Thanks to a new app that has already been successfully tested at the Acropolis Museum, visitors will be able to use their mobile devices ("smart" mobiles and tablets) in the future to enjoy an interactive and personalized tour experience at the museums.

The new technology, under the name CHESS (Cultural-Heritage Experiences through Socio-personal interactions and Storytelling), developed by French, Greek, British and German researchers, with funding of approximately 2,8 million euros from the 7th Programme- Framework for her Research of the Union. It is officially presented at the Innovation Summit, which will take place in Brussels on March 10 and 11.

The innovative technology, coordinated by the French company DIGINEXT, uses portable of augmented (augmented) reality and geo-location technologies to turn the usual passive tour of a museum into an active, personal and interactive cultural experience.

Unlike traditional museum guides, the CHESS app tells each visitor a specific story, which focuses on the that are more relevant to his interests, with less or more detail, depending on his desire. The stories can be enriched with multimedia and 3D games, while in some cases the exhibits "talk" and invite visitors to interact with them.

According to Dr. Maria Roussou of the University of Athens, the program can revolutionize the way we behave and operate when we visit a museum.

"CHESS aims to enhance and personalize the experience of each visitor, creating a personalized experience that takes into account everyone's hobbies and interests. Driving the visitor to the exhibits of interest to him and offering interactive content such as quizzes and games enhances the user experience. This is not only for the benefit of the user but also of the museum, who wants his visitors to get the best experience and to visit again, "said Professor Yiannis Ioannidis, of the University of Athens.

Last year, CHESS (http://www.chessexperience.eu) was successfully tested at the Acropolis Museum in Athens and the Cite de l'Espace park in Toulouse, France, for more than six months. CHESS was developed with the collaboration of seven partners, namely DIGINEXT (France), the University of Athens (Department of Informatics and Telecommunications), the University of Nottingham (UK), the Fraunhofer Institute (Germany), Real Fusio (France) , the Acropolis Museum and the Cite de l'Espace (France).

The application will be made available on the market by DIGINEXT, so that the program can jump from the research stage to its commercial exploitation in the market, which, according to the coordinators of the projectth, it will happen in two years. Since there are approximately 55.000 museums worldwide, there is great potential for growth globally.
