Its latest operating system ecosystem ( Windows 8 ) is banned on state computers, the Chinese government has mysteriously announced.
The Central Government Purchasing Center has announced a ban on installing Windows 8 in a circular issued on the use of energy-intensive devices, according to Reuters. According to the official Xinhua agency, the ban aims to boost computer security following Microsoft's decision to discontinue support for Windows XP, which are widely used in China. Neither the government nor Xinhua has clarified how the ban reduces energy consumption or enhances computer security.
However, an analyst firm who commented on the issue has impressed how Beijing hopes to push Microsoft to continue support for XP. "China's decision to ban Windows 8 from public procurement creates obstacles to Microsoft's effort to replace XP, which corresponds to 50% of the desktop market in China," Canalys said.

China has always been a troubled market for Microsoft, which has protested 2011 that software piracy has made China's revenue smaller than in the Netherlands, even though computer sales fluctuated to US levels.
