Europol's cybercrime prosecution team "dropped" it botnet RAMNIT, which had infected 3.2 million computers worldwide.
The NCA (National Crime Agency) team worked with the respective departments in the Netherlands, Italy and Germany to shut down the administration servers and control that the botnet was using.
The RAMNIT was responsible for spreading malware through seemingly innocent links that were sent through phishing emails or social networking sites. It was used by scammers mainly to intercept money from which owners were Windows users.
“This malicious software δίνει ουσιαστικά στους εγκληματίες ένα backdoor ώστε να μπορούν να πάρουν τον έλεγχο του computer access your images, passwords or other personal data. They still use it to send out further spam messages or launch illegal attacks on other websites," said Steve Pye of the NCA.
Today the servers are being analyzed and the research is ongoing, NCA reports. It should be mentioned that Europol was notified of the existence of RAMNIT by Microsoft.
