An important case of online fraud was solved by the Financial Police and Cybercrime Prosecution Service, using the method of of products from an online store.

Specifically, the action of a six-member criminal group, the members of which, using a stolen credit card, made a number of online purchases from an online store.

They are five (5) foreigners (a 29-year-old citizen of the Republic of the Gambia, two citizens of Nigeria, 38 and 36 years old and two foreigners whose full details have not yet been identified) as well as a 36-year-old citizen, who was arrested with the spontaneous procedure, the day before yesterday (30-01-2014).

Investigation of the case began after an e-shop owner's complaint, according to which unknown perpetrators made five (5) purchase orders from its store, valued at 1.150, which they paid using a stolen credit card.

After the third (3) order, the complainant had been informed by the Banking Branch that these transactions were being questioned as the credit card in question had been used to repay the amounts declared as stolen.

From the Electronic Crime Prosecution Sub-Directorate, a police operation was organized the day before yesterday (30.01.2014) in the morning in the center of Athens, where the 36-year-old woman was found to be in possession of an order - a package, which had previously been sent from the online store to a branch of couriers. A passport belonging to the 29-year-old foreigner was also found in her possession.

Subsequently, it was attacked at the headquarters of the Office and the police investigation that followed, was identified as being involved in "misleading" online orders.

A survey carried out at her home in Galatsi, in the presence of a Judicial Officer, found a number of clothing that the complainant acknowledged as the products he had sent with the aforementioned electronic orders. In addition, the passports belonging to the two Nigerian nationals as well as fake IDs of United Kingdom nationals were found.

The arrested man was taken to the Athens Prosecutor's Office, while the case filed at the expense of all the parties was similarly submitted.

The Hellenic Police Headquarters recommends and encourages Internet users:

  • Be especially careful about transactions they make over the internet
  • In case of transactions and to avoid their possible deception, when purchasing goods or services, they should check whether the website they use is valid and choose for their purchases only known and secure websites
  • Use prepaid cards in their online purchases to make available only the amount to be used immediately, while allowing money to be added only when needed to safely process online transactions
