Help the earthquake giving free access to your WiFi

An appeal by the Italian Red Cross for residents of the areas affected by earthquake yesterday to open their WiFi, with free access, without being protected by a code.

An 6.2-sized earthquake struck central Italy on Wednesday morning, killing 247 people so far in small towns in this area. Disaster relief organizations are already working hard to find and rescue survivors. To help their efforts, the Italian Red Cross asked the citizens who live in nearby areas to turn them off WiFi so that workers and those affected can easily use these networks.

In addition to helping rescue teams stay connected to the internet, unlocking the WiFi network can also help survivors contact loved ones and update them on their situation. In such difficult situations sharing the internet connection could also allow people in the area to bypass the congestion of mobile services by using VoIP and messages.

Of course, disabling the code brings a risk for their users to spy on someone else's web traffic, but if you do not need to use access to private services like online banking, etc, then unlocking WiFi will not matter.

Surely the move to help someone who is in a state of danger deserves the risk and the trouble of temporarily disabling the Wifi access restriction.

Of course, the news concerns the residents of the neighboring country, but keep in mind this request of the Italian Red Cross, as it is necessary to do it in every corner of this planet that is affected by a destruction. Greece is an earthquake-prone country and if at some point the earthquake hits your area, don't hesitate for a moment to provide all possible help to the rescue crews and your fellow citizens by disabling your WiFi lock.
