The Chinese company Huawei has officially released its latest operating system HarmonyOS 2 on some products. The company is now ready to push the new HarmonyOS 2 operating system to smartphones, tablets and many other devices, starting with the Huawei Mate 40, Mate 30, P40, Mate X2, Nova 8, MatePad Pro series and many others.
HarmonyOS is pre-installed with some applications and offers support for third-party applications.
With the HarmonyOS Zone in the Huawei App Marketplace, it makes it easier for operating system users to find and install compatible applications. Users can search for the terms "HarmonyOS" or "HongMeng” in the App Marketplace to find the Zone that only offers compatible apps. Apps built for HarmonyOS are tagged with “HMOS” in the corner of the app icon.
The Chinese company is preparing to add new features to its internal system to make it easier for third-party developers to develop applications for the platform. When Huawei first unveiled the operating system, it said it planned to update 100 devices and may need the first half of 2022 to complete the process.
The company plans to ship more than 300 million devices running HarmonyOS (or HongMeng OS as it's called in China) by the end of this year. It will be interesting to see if Huawei manages to impose its new one software as an alternative to Android.
Huawei has made available all the basic modules of HarmonyOS in “Open Atom Open Source Foundation". This allows interested device manufacturers to have the HarmonyOS system codes to develop products according to its requirements. Currently, there are more than 500.000 developers working with the HarmonyOS team, and the company expects many more to join soon.
