Microsoft's acquisition of Nokia's devices and services division was announced last September. An important role in the process was played by the then head of Nokia, Stephen Elop, who was also a former Microsoft executive. In fact, after Ballmer resigned from Microsoft, Elop was considered as the most likely candidate to replace him, but in the end, Satya Nadella was appointed CEO of Microsoft.
Eventually, Stephen Elop took over the Microsoft Devices and Studio section, that is, the portion that Nokia will join when the acquisition is completed. It is, in fact, to have the same responsibilities as when he was in charge of the Finnish company. The main difference is that it will also be responsible for other Microsoft products, such as Surface tablets and Xbox consoles.
With the acquisition, Microsoft hopes to give new impetus to the smartphone segment, as it will be able to offer its own devices in conjunction with functional Windows Phone system.
