Η NASA published a map today from the program Near Earth Object (NEO). This particular scheme looks for and records all the small asteroids that have managed to enter the Earth's atmosphere. The NASA map shows signs of falling across the globe.
The map was released to the scientific community, and depicts the data which have been collected by the sensors of the government of USA from 1994 to 2013. Evidence shows that Earth's atmosphere has been penetrated by many small asteroids. There are 556 different recorded cases over a 20 year period.
Almost all asteroids of this size decompose into the atmosphere and are usually harmless. The notable exception was that of the Chelyabinsk asteroid, which was the largest asteroid that landed the Earth at this time.
New map data could help scientists improve estimates of Near Earth Object (NEO) size distribution.
Finding and characterizing hazardous asteroids to protect our planet is a high priority for NASA. It's one of the reasons NASA has increased its investment in detection asteroids, characterizing and mitigating their activities over the past five years.
In addition, NASA is developing aggressive strategies with partners in the US and abroad to detect, monitoring and Near Earth Object characterization. These activities aim to help identify a Near Earth Object that could endanger Earth with an impact.
