OpenArchives.gr: Single search and navigation of 723.000 digital documents from 73 collections, the largest Greek portal of scientific content.
OpenArchives.gr, the largest Greek Gateway to Accepted Scientific Content, developed by the National Documentation Center (ESF), which already gathers 723.000 digital documents from 73 collections, 61, has been visually redesigned, technically upgraded and semantically enriched benefit of the research, educational and scientific community it serves.
The portal, which is offered with a dynamic and more user-friendly interface, provides its visitors with improved ways of navigation, as well as new advanced features search to the rich content of its collections, based on dates and types of material. This is achieved by the semantic enrichment and content curation that the ECB applies to the metadata it accumulates, using advanced semantic tools and vocabularies.
At the same time, the collections included in the portal were updated. OpenArchives.gr gained a clear scientific orientation, as the cultural collections it hosted are now accessible through the SearchCulture.gr portal, the national cultural heritage content collection.
The visitor of the renewed portal OpenArchives.gr (www.openarchives.gr) can browse from a common point more than 723.000 digital records and search gray literature collections of academic institutions and scientific content produced by research, science and educations. Doctoral Dissertations, postgraduate theses, books, published articles in scientific journals, conference proceedings, book reviews, interviews and recordings are just some types of content gathered in the upgraded online environment of OpenArchives.gr.
The content indexed in 73 digital collections of OpenArchives.gr is distributed to individual digital libraries, archives and institutional repositories on the Internet and is difficult to locate by established search engines. The scientific content gathered in the upgraded infrastructure of OpenArchives.gr is easily searchable and dynamic, as it is regularly updated with new collections, while the existing ones are constantly updated, following the process of producing and publishing the institutions providing their collections on the portal.
The collections of OpenArchives.gr come from 61 reputable institutions from Greece and Cyprus, such as universities, research centers, scientific societies, public libraries, archives and institutional collections. Therefore, the content of the collections covers a huge variety of subject areas and shows great diversity.
Utilizing OpenArchives' search engine, a user can identify books and studies from the field of Human Sciences, scientific articles and educational material from the Social Sciences sector, journal articles covering the range of both Natural and Agricultural Sciences, diplomatic work from the field of Medicine and Health Sciences and presentations at conferences with content related to the fields of Engineering and Technology.
The operators bring multiple benefits from their participation in the scientific content library OpenArchives.gr. The presence of their collections at a common point of view and search contributes to their content, increases the access of users to their infrastructures and facilitates the dissemination of their work.
Among the collections included in OpenArchives.gr are: the National Archives of Doctoral Theses (EADD) managed by the ESF, Helios repository of the National Hellenic Research Foundation, the Digital Library of the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT), the Hellenic Open University Repository (NTUA), the Scientific Library of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh), the Digital Library of Gray Bibliography of the University of Athens, the repository of the Central Library of NTUA and that of the Technical University of Crete, the repository of the Technological Educational Institute of Epirus and the Blister repository of the Open University of Cyprus.
Scientists belonging to the broader ecosystem of knowledge, provided they have documented material and implement the OAI-PMH metadata protocol, can easily place it on OpenArchives.gr and gain an important channel for the display and distribution of their collections.
In addition, OpenArchives.gr has two new ways of disseminating and reusing its rich content, via Web API, which allows applications third parties to search and view documents hosted on the portal, and as Linked Data, thus contributing to the Semantic Web.
The ESF develops and operates OpenArchives.gr as part of its institutional role, namely the accumulation, organization, documentation and dissemination of the digital content of the country, in line with international standards and the modern needs of users. The unified availability of authentic Greek digital content takes place through two open web portals: the OpenArchives.gr scientific search portal and the SearchCulture.gr cultural content search portal. In this way, the Greek digital scientific and cultural stock produced with public funding is highlighted and made available with clear licenses for re-use to researchers, the educational community and citizens through a public digital space.
