Sony and Panasonic today announced the completion of Archival Disc, a new format of optical discs.
Thus, the first "generation" of Archival Disc will have 300 GB capacity and are expected to be released in the summer of 2015. The plans of the two companies do not stop here, as they intend to build 500 GB discs in the second phase and eventually 1 TB capacity.
The companies claim that, due to its resistance to moisture and its fluctuations temperatures, optical discs are the ideal medium for preserving valuable digital data for several years. So, at least initially, they are targeting Archival Discs for organizations and businesses that need to store archives for long periods of time, which they use relatively rarely.
