No, it's not sexist news, we just didn't expect it. Sony reported that female PlayStation console owners have increased dramatically since the days of the PS1, significantly expanding the audience for Sony's games.
In a presentation to its investors, the Japanese giant noted that about 41% of PlayStation 5 and PS4 owners are women. Compare that to just 18 percent on the PS1, and you'll notice a clear demographic increase for female consoles.
On the other hand, this increase highlights the importance of rich, diverse content in the games industry. PlayStation Studios has done a great job of diversifying in recent years, introducing strong female protagonists, such as Aloy in Horizon Zero Dawn and Chloe Frazer in Uncharted: The Lost Legacy.
On the other hand it is great to see more and more people playing digital games, as more users means more investment, and ultimately, better games and services for all of us. Sony notes that expanding demographics in terms of age, gender and geography all present growth opportunities for the company.
