Really, who are the first ones? Linux distributions by public preference? Below you will find the first 10 distributions by public preference as presented by Distrowatch.
The name of the HPD column comes from the Hits Per Day initials and the numbers are updated daily.
As you will notice Mint Linux is firmly in the first place of the public preference. Debian follows, followed by Debian-based Ubuntu. Distributions (Ubuntu Mint) are basically based on Debian.
Here's a distro with a long history that I particularly like: the OpenSuse. The next one (Manjaro) is a fork of Arch which is in the 9th position. Fedora and CentOS in 6th and 8th place respectively are based on RedHat history.
It should be mentioned that the big winner according to the above ranking is Debian, which, although in the second place, feeds the first and third distribution. In essence, it is in the first 3 places.
