Update Windows 7-8 on Windows 10 with Windows Update

Do you want to upgrade to Windows 10 easily? The only options you had in the past for upgrading from an older version of Windows were to run the installer from either an installation disc or a flash drive.

Microsoft trying to simplify the process added an option to upgrade to Windows 10 using Windows Update.

Windows Update is your operating system's update service, which is best known for security updates once a month on all supported Windows devices.

The benefit of upgrading through Windows Update is convenience. You do not need to download any Windows 10 ISO, you do not need to burn it to a DVD or copy it to a USB Flash Drive, and you do not have to run it on your system.

Note: Windows 10 is not ready yet and it is not recommended to upgrade the systems you are working on. You can do it though if you have a backup system and want to try out the new OS. It would be nice to have a full one as well copy security, in case you wish to turn back.

The upgrade process

The first thing you need to do is download one small program from Microsoft which will prepare Windows 7 or Windows 8 for the upgrade.

Start upgrade now (Direct Link)

The file has a size of 10 Megabyte and runs automatically on your computer after running it. It requires a restart of your computer to finalize the changes it made.

The application will start running within your current operating system after restarting.

After you restart, open Windows Update on your computer.

In the end, you will see the Windows 10 update and you can start the installation with one click.
As you can see in the above screenshot, the update is 2,8 Gigabyte size. The download may take one hour, depending on the speed of your Internet connection.
The updated installer will follow the same upgrade process as the ISO installer.

Important remarks

After updating it seems possible to go back to your old operating system. In this case, it's a good idea to have a backup of your important files and data before you continue with the update.

Also, there is no option to change the language of the environment during the upgrade process.

You can remove the "update to Windows 10 preparation update" again from Windows. You will find it in the list of installed updates as "Microsoft Windows Update (KB2990214)" or "Microsoft Windows Update (KB2990214)".

Windows 10 will be a free upgrade in the first year for all home users of Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, and it's very likely that Microsoft will make Windows Update one of the options delivery of information.
