Vodafone Foundation, i.e. the charity arm of Vodafone, launched Instant Network Mini, a portable mobile network that fits inside a backpack and weighs less than 11 kg.
The Instant Network Mini can be made operational within ten minutes, allowing help workers to have seamless communication in natural disasters.
Its great advantage is the fact that it can be carried as an ordinary luggage from any means of transportation and can be used by personnel with minimal technical knowledge.
Vodafone's "backpack" can offer up to five simultaneous calls over a 100 meter range and allow text messaging to thousands of recipients, messages that could contain crucial survival information.
The 2G GSM network is used to operate the system. More specifically, the base of the GSM transmission station is connected and hosted by the wider telecommunications network via satellite connection.
Vodafone's Instant Network Mini is development of the Instant Network, a portable network which is transported in a total of four suitcases and weighs about 100 kg. Of course, the original system offers a significantly longer operating range, which reaches up to five kilometers.
This system was developed in the Philippines, 24 hours after the hurricane hit in November of 2013. Through Instant Network, it was possible to send 1,4 million text and 443.288 phone calls over 29 days.
Mini Instant Network was developed for Vodafone Foundation by Vodafone Spain, Huawei and Telecoms Sans Frontières.
