Yes the Google will no longer manufacture self-driving cars. Waymo will do it.
Basically, the unit self-driving car company Google X, formerly codenamed Chauffeur, has reportedly become an independent company under the Alphabet umbrella. Waymo's new CEO Jon Krafcik made the announcement today at a press conference in California.
As TechCrunch reports, Google's automotive division recently acquired executives from experienced business leaders. Krafcik, who was hired this year, worked for Hyundai, while their former CEO airbnb and TripAdviser Shaun Stewart was also recently recruited to strengthen the team.
With the creation of Waymo, Alphabet seems to be trying to promote new technology in the real world by exploring collaborations with existing automakers instead of trying to completely eliminate the driver-man from the equation.
The move was rather expected, considering Alphabet's raison d'être, which came to split them up functions of Google, but also the delay in promoting self-driving vehicles by regulatory authorities.
