CBP (Customs and Border Protection): A new facial recognition system tested at many US airports helped capture a scammer for the first time at the Dulles International Airport near Washington, DC
The US Bureau of Customs and Border (CBP from Customs and Border Protection) published one Press release which states that a 26-year-old man traveling from Brazil on a French passport was identified by an airport facial recognition machine, which was put on mode three days before. In the subsequent check, the suspect was found to be from the Republic of Congo.
Of course, CBP is celebrating the event, as about 105.000 people arrive from abroad in the U.S. every day (this number does not include travelers from Mexico and Canada), according to the International Trade Administration, as reported by Quartz mentioned him February of 2017. Illegal entry into the U.S. is running high, so the agency needs all the help it can get to control it identity so many people on a daily basis.
The biometric technology that CBP reportedly uses collects first photos from all travelers and links them to flight tickets and travel documents (mainly passports and visas). So upon touching down on American soil, foreign travelers are led to a camera, which captures an image and compares it to the one on travel documents to see if they are who they say they are.
The CBP hopes that this practice will not only help identify terrorists and fraudsters who want to enter the United States, but also speed up the passage of airport controls, allowing travelers to go through security procedures without having a boarding pass. The technology is currently being tested at 13 airports - entry and exit points and it is very likely that the number will increase in the near future.
When it comes to our personal security and privacy, Americans know very well how to gild the pill. For those who know or remember, the term "collateral damage" usually refers to human lives (civilians) and has become known through the US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
