The National Association of Secretaries of State, the organization behind the American public electoral system issued the following statement on hack:
Our main concern about the approach adopted at DEFCON is that it uses a pseudo-environment that is by no means the state electoral system. Providing congressmen, voting machines, most of which are no longer used, does not mean that they are the exact machines that the government uses before and on election day. We are also worried why the creation of "fake" electoral systems and databases for voter registration for hacking by participants is unrealistic.
However, the exact reproduction of the natural environment of an online polling center was not exactly the point of the exercises. The aim was to focus on the defects discovered by the participants and showed to DEFCON.
