Η Seagate mentioned that the new toughs are coming discs with magnetic technology enrollments with heat assist (HAMR), will initially have a capacity of 32TB and will be released in the third quarter of 2023.
The new technology is expected to increase the capacity to 40 TB very soon. Meanwhile, the high capacity HAMR hard drives they will coexist with them 24 TB and 28 TB drives which have not yet been released.
The initial 32TB HAMR-based hard drives from Seagate will carry 10 platters. This n HAMR technology of 10 platters and 20 heads, will be used for hard drives of 36 TB, 40 TB and even higher capacities in the future, probably with as few changes as possible.
Seagate said it will launch 30-plus hard drives terabyte in the third quarter of 2023, so we expect these drives to hit the shelves and machines of cloud service providers in the coming months.
Pending the full release of HAMR drives, some cloud service providers may choose to use Seagate's 24 TB hard drives, which are based on traditional vertical magnetic recording (PMR) technology with two-dimensional magnetic recording (TDMR) read heads.
Seagate has emphasized that these hard drives will be its final high-capacity drives that use vertical magnetic recording.
The good thing is that this usually undercuts the price of the lower end models. Hopefully when the 32tb drives come out we can get 16TB drives for 150 euros or less.
