Microsoft will release Windows 11 on October 5

Microsoft has announced that Windows 11 will be released on October 5 and will be offered as a free upgrade.

The new functional Windows 11 will be available on October 5 as a free upgrade for eligible Windows 10 PCs or on new hardware that ships with Windows 11 preinstalled.

The free upgrade, like many Windows upgrades in the past, will be available in phases. It will first be offered on new suitable devices and then Windows 11 will be available for most devices on the market. The difference between the phases is expected to last a few weeks after October 5 and will probably be accessible to all the machines provided, until the middle of 2022.

"Following the vast knowledge of Windows 10, we want to ensure that we provide you with the best possible experience." explained Aaron Woodman, CEO of Windows Marketing at Microsoft. "We expect that all eligible devices will receive a free upgrade to Windows 11 by mid-2022."

If your computer is not fully compatible with Windows 11, Microsoft will continue to support Windows 10 until October 14, 2025.

It is not clear how many important updates Microsoft will release for Windows 10 in the next four years, however, a update 21H2 is coming for Windows 10 users later this year, and will include GPU support for the Windows Linux Subsystem (WSL), Windows Hello enhancements, and WPA3 H2E Wi-Fi security support.
