A US security company says it has gathered evidence that the Russian government is spying on hundreds of US, European and Asian companies. This is the first time Moscow has been linked to cyber-attacks for economic - rather than political - benefits.
According to the company, CrowdStrike , the victims of the cyber espionage campaign include businesses from the energy and technology sectors.
CrowdStrike refused to enter details about these company losses or report any victims, citing research-related confidentiality agreements.
Officials from the Russian Interior Ministry did not comment on the incident, Reuters reports.
“These attacks appear to have been motivated by the Russian government’s interest in helping domestic industry remain competitive in key sectors of national importance,” Dmitri Alperovitch , chief technology officer at CrowdStrike, told Reuters on Tuesday evening.
Of course, we can not be sure of anything anymore, since we do not know who financed the research conducted by CrowdStrike. As all the spying actions between countries show, it is a very cloudy landscape.
