Really, who are the first ones? distributions Linux preferred by the public? Below you will find the top 10 distros by public preference as presented by Distrowatch.
The name of the HPD column comes from the Hits Per Day initials and the numbers are updated daily.
As you will notice Mint Linux is consistently in the first place of public preference. It follows Debian and soon after Debian-based Ubuntu. Basically both distributions (Ubuntu Mint) are based on Debian.
Here's a distro with a long history that I'm particularly fond of: OpenSuse. The next one (Manjaro) is a fork of Arch which is in the 9th position. Fedora and CentOS ranked 6th and 8th respectively are based on record RedHat.
It should be mentioned that the big winner according to the above ranking is Debian, which, although in the second place, feeds the first and third distribution. In essence, it is in the first 3 places.
