Yesterday Canonical presented the new operating system Ubuntu 16.10 yakkety Yak. Below you will find instructions for upgrading your system, but you should know that
if you're running Ubuntu 16.04 XTS, you may not need to upgrade.
Why
Because the Ubuntu 16.10 version is a short-term support release (supported only for 9 months until July 2017) while Ubuntu 16.04 is long-lasting support is more stable and more reliable, and you can have software updates and security updates for the next 5 years, until April of 2021.
However, if for some reason you still want to use Ubuntu 16.10 Yakkety Yak, follow the instructions below to upgrade:
First, make sure you have a recent backup of your most important files on an external drive. Then you can start the upgrade process by running the Software & Updates application, which you will find in Unity Dash.
Go to the “Updates” tab and select “For any new version” instead of “For long-term support versions) through the drop-down menu under “New Ubuntu version notification” (Notify me of a new Ubuntu version). Close the “Software & Updates” application and press Alt+F2 together to run the “update-manager” command.
The software update tool will pop up and list you in a window:
"The software on this computer is up to date. However, Ubuntu 16.10 is available (you have 16.04 LTS). ”
Click the "Upgrade" button and follow the instructions on your screen. You will need to restart your computer after the upgrade.
