Yesterday Canonical presented the new functional Ubuntu 16.10 Yakkety Yak. In previous publication we mentioned what the new one is bringing and that this version is targeted at those seeking the latest software and Linux technologies.
Below you will find instructions for upgrading your system, but you should know that
if you're running Ubuntu 16.04 XTS, you may not need to upgrade.
Why
Because the Ubuntu 16.10 release is a short-term release supports (only supported for 9 months, until July 2017) while Ubuntu 16.04 is supported longer, it is more stable and reliable, and you can have software and security updates for the next 5 years, until April 2021.
However, if for some reason you still want to use Ubuntu 16.10 Yakkety Yak, follow the instructions below to upgrade:
First, make sure you have a recent backup of your most important files on an external drive. Then you can start the upgrade process by running the Software & Updates application, which you will find in Unity Dash.
Πηγαίνετε στην καρτέλα “Ενημερώσεις” (Updates) και επιλέξτε το “Για κάθε νέα έκδοση” (For any new version) αντί του “Για υποστήριξη μακροχρόνιων εκδόσεων” (For long-term support versions) μέσω του drop-down μενού που υπάρχει στο “Ειδοποίηση για νέα έκδοση του Ubuntu” (Notify me of a new Ubuntu version). Close the “Software & Updates” application and press Alt+F2 together to run the “update-manager” command.
The software update tool will pop up and list you in a window:
"The software on this computer is up to date. However, Ubuntu 16.10 is available (you have 16.04 LTS).”
Click the "Upgrade" button and follow the instructions on your screen. You will need to restart your computer after the upgrade.
