Windows 7: 3 years extension to conditional updates

Windows 7? THE made two important announcements today at Microsoft 365 blog. The appears to change support times for Windows 7 and Windows 10 operating systems under certain conditions.

Jared Spataro, Corporate Vice President for the and Windows Marketing, revealed that companies can extend the support period of the Windows 7 operating system by three years, and that Enterprise and Education editions of Windows 10 may change to extend support to 30 months.Windows 7

Support for Windows 7 will expire on 14 January of 2020, which means that Microsoft will not release security updates from this day on.

Corporate customers can choose to extend the period for three additional years to secure support by January of 2023.

This option will be available to all users of Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Enterprise in Licensing” and customers with “Windows Software Assurance, Windows 10 Enterprise or Windows 10 Education subscriptions” will have discounts on the extended support period that will be sold per device.

Spataro reported that Office 365 ProPlus will continue to be supported on Windows 7 Extended Update Security (ESU) devices.

Users using Windows 7 Home devices can not have extensive support.

The second change announced by Spataro is valid for customers of Enterprise and Education versions of Microsoft Windows 10.

The change extends the support period to specific versions of Windows 10 in some cases up to 30 months. The default support period was up to 18 months for all versions but for long-term service releases.

So:

  • The versions of Windows 10 Enterprise and Education will be supported for 30 months if the target version is the second feature update for the year (September / October).
  • All Enterprise and Education versions currently supported will be extended to support 30 months from their original release date.
  • March editions will still only be supported for 18 months.
  • Non-Enterprise and Non-Education versions of Windows 10 will still be supported for 18 months from the release date, regardless of whether the March or September version is installed.

The ability to extend the support period for Windows 7 by 3 years gives companies three additional years of security updates. Extensive support, however, costs and will only be available in Enterprise and Education versions. Microsoft will not extend the support period for Hone edition users.
